The editorial “Feeding time at City Hall” (July 31) criticizes Mayor Richard Daley because the City Council raised his pay $21,100, to $191,100 a year. They also raised aldermen’s salaries $10,000, to $85,000 per year. Although this may be a valid criticism of salaries for an alderman’s part-time job, it certainly does not apply to the mayor.

The mayor is the chief executive of a billion-dollar budget and more than 40,000 employees. Any CEO in private industry who has similar responsibilities would get millions of dollars in basic salary, millions in stock sharing and millions in bonuses.

By comparison, Mayor Daley’s $200,000 salary is a pittance.
