The article on the Chicago Park District Junior Lifeguard Competition (Metro, July 23) pointed out a wonderfully positive feature of Chicago’s summer programs for children. Not only were these youngsters having fun, they were practicing water safety and skills for future jobs.
We are fortunate to have Joseph Pecoraro as head of beaches and pools, who has encouraged a variety of aquatic activities instruction. Because of his involvement, his caring, Chicago lifeguards and junior lifeguards are some of the best in the nation, and our lakefront is much safer.
