I have been amazed at the animosity stirred by Random House’s list of the 100 best novels. Yes, the list reflects the gender and age of the panel of judges. Yes, we each have our favorites that didn’t make the cut. But such hostility toward “Ulysses”?

I’ve enjoyed reading and rereading Ulysses. I hope the list stirs well-deserved interest in the genius of Joyce.
