Properly understood, the doctrine of papal infallibility as taught by the Roman Catholic Church would not lead the faithful to think the doctrine should be shelved because of its potential for being used arbitrarily, as Robert McClory states in the July 28 Tempo article on the subject. The Holy Father cannot “use” the charism of infallibility to teach arbitrarily. Far from teaching arbitrarily, on important matters of faith and morals, he is restricted to teaching only that which is true. Catholics believe the Bishop of Rome will be guided to teach the truth by whatever means the Holy Spirit chooses–scholarship, counsel, solicitation of opinion, ecumenical assembly.
