Herman “Hy” Berkowitz, 75, a shoe salesman, died at a hospital in Aventura, Fla., on Friday. A former Skokie resident, Mr. Berkowitz managed Manny Berger stores and other shoe shops throughout the Chicago area. He got his first shoe-selling job when he was 15 and spent more than 50 years in the business. He served as a clerical secretary in the Army during World War II and afterward wrote and performed humorous skits and songs for war veterans. Mr. Berkowitz is survived by his wife, Harriet; a daughter, Rhona; a son, Irwin; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A service will be held at noon Monday in Furth Funeral Home, 9200 N. Skokie Blvd., Skokie.
