The Palatine-based Community Consolidated School District 15 Board of Education on Wednesday night approved the use of so-called learner statements for each grade level.

Learner statements formally list expectations for students. Teachers will use the statements as instructional goals and at parent-teacher conferences, district officials said.

The guidelines set standards students must meet before advancing to the next grade level. For example, 5th graders in social studies would need to understand U.S. social history. Kindergartners would have to be able to identify major body parts or understand the basic concept of rolling a ball.

“This is a document that will never be finished and will be reviewed every year to determine if our students are doing what they should be doing,” said Kay Woelfel, assistant superintendent for instructional services.
