In reply to the column “Inside retailing” by Susan Chandler (Business, Aug. 8), inquiring “where is Ald. Burton Natarus when you need him,” rest assured I am there. We have complained to The Limited, the parent company, concerning the rather risque and bad-taste displays in some windows of its subsidiary stores. I have asked that they voluntarily comply with the spirit and content of the Michigan Avenue sign ordinance, which is one of the strictest in the country.
But commercial displays are protected by the same 1st Amendment that enables you to criticize in the newspapers what you do not like.
In short, you cannot legislate aesthetics, color or bad taste. Try it. If we do, the city may find itself in federal court defending itself from a damage suit brought under the 1st Amendment.
