In his “Truth and consequences” commentary on July 31, R. Bruce Dold predicts that Congress will not impeach President Clinton because the public won’t want to endure “another long national nightmare.” I hope he is wrong.

If there is evidence of misconduct subject to impeachment, then impeach. That is the way our government is designed to work, indeed, to survive.

The founding fathers elected a president instead of appointing a king so that no person could be above the law. The impeachment of a president is evidence of this country’s strength, not weakness. It shows the world that the ideals of our founding fathers are alive and well. The impeachment of a president is cause for national pride, not humiliation.

If there is evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors, impeaching President Clinton would not be a disgrace or a “national nightmare”; allowing him to stay in office and govern without subjecting him to impeachment would be.
