It is with some dismay that I read your editorial “Time to act on global warming” (Aug. 9).
The real environmental threat is the ever-increasing water pollution in the Third World. Restricting carbon-dioxide emissions in the developed countries will surely move even more industry and its associated pollution into the unregulated areas of the world.
It is illuminating that you chose to end your editorial with a reference to the continuing success story that is the Chicago River. It is water pollution, especially in the Third World, that is our greatest environmental threat and our greatest environmental success to date.
We should not allow our scarce resources to be sidetracked into the debatable threat of global warming.
