The Arlington Heights Memorial Library and a non-profit fundraising organization are planning a mural depicting the history of Arlington Heights.
The mural–three 22-by-6-foot panels–will hang inside the library.
The mural will cost about $9,000 and be funded entirely by Friends of the Library.
Library trustees approved the concept, but members were concerned that initial artistic renderings failed to show the diversity of early Arlington Heights.
“When we saw the first draft, it was suggested that women weren’t given enough credit for their role in the library’s history. This was remedied in the later rendering,” said Trustee Richard Frisbie.
Since the first rendering, “The artist did a lot of homework,” according to Cathy Kapica, a library trustee who serves as the board’s liaison to the Friends.
“I’m confident the board’s concerns were addressed. (The mural) will be historically accurate,” she said.
A contract between Friends and the artist, Rolf Mueller, has yet to be signed.
