As a 36-year resident of the 18th Ward, I am disappointed in the compromise ward map. If U.S. District Judge Elaine Bucklo were to come and take a walk through this western part of the 18th Ward, she would realize that her approval of the compromise map creates a gross imbalance in the opposite direction.
As your editorial correctly observed, the year 2000 census will prove that this remap was unnecessary, and the existing 18th Ward boundaries will provide the “supermajority” sought to meet the Voting Rights Act requirements. The $20 million of tax revenue that could have been put to many better uses by our city government is such waste, while our outstanding alderman, Thomas Murphy, is sacrificed by the powers in City Hall.
