Hanson isn’t the only trio of cutie siblings who leave fans humming and bopping with catchy lyrics and upbeat tunes. Now there’s Cleopatra.
The three British sisters are taking the pop music world by storm with their irresistible hit single “Cleopatra’s Theme,” featured on their debut album, Comin’ Atcha! The Higgins sisters have been a hit in England for months, but they started catching on here when Madonna introduced them at the Nickelodeon “Kids’ Choice Awards” last April.
“Be nice to them,” Madonna instructed. Fans aren’t just being nice; they’re smothering them with love by snapping up “Cleopatra’s Theme.”
“It’s been really exciting and crazy,” says Yonah, who at 14 is the baby of the group. “We’ve been to America, Italy, all over Europe playing.”
Yonah and sisters Zainam, 17, and Cleo, 16, have been practicing song-and-dance routines since the crib. About six years ago, their “mum,” as the girls will tell you, began entering them in singing contests.
“We used to mess about the house, singing and dressing up like stars like Madonna and Michael Jackson, making up routines,” Zainam recalls. “After we won our first contest, we got hooked up with a management team.”
Eventually the trio caught Madonna’s eye. She signed them to her Maverick record label .
Madonna isn’t the only megastar who has noticed Cleopatra. Zainam remembers the night they met the Spice Girls at the Brit Awards. “Geri just hugged us to death.”
Cleo adds: “Victoria was a bit shy. They were really sweet, and they gave us a lot of advice.”
Most of the advice the sisters get comes from their mother, a former singer who tours with her daughters and serves as a background singer, makeup artist, hairdresser and disciplinarian.
When Cleopatra isn’t rehearsing, traveling or performing, the sisters like to chill at a hip hangout called Sega World in London. “It’s got lots of video games, music,” Yonah says. “All the pop stars go there, and it’s always full.”
Still, free time is rare. But they know being busy is part of the gig – and they’ll take it while it lasts.
“In the future I hope we have a No. 1 album and the group lasts forever,” Cleo says. “Can you imagine us singing, `Cleopatra comin’ atcha!’ at 90?”
