Walter Winkelman, 100, a lifelong resident of the Marengo-Union area, died Tuesday in St. Joseph Hospital in Belvidere. He was born on Nov. 29, 1897, in Coral Township. He worked for many years grading and maintaining roads for the McHenry County Highway Department, retiring in 1948. He then worked for P&H Diesel Division, which manufactured heavy-duty engine parts, in Crystal Lake until 1963. He is survived by a sister, Clara Brace; and a brother, Melvin. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Marengo-Union Funeral Home, 505 E. Grant Highway, Marengo. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in St. John’s Lutheran Church, 6621 Main St., Union.
