After a series of postponements, Warrenville City Council members this week approved Mayor Vivian Lund’s recommendation to appoint resident Tom Sinnott to a vacancy on the city’s Plan Commission/Zoning Board of Appeals.

The council’s 5-3 vote came after Lund said she would appoint Sinnott temporarily to the Ward 4 vacancy regardless of the council’s action, which she may do under city law, according to City Atty. John Pieper. The mayor may appoint a person to serve on the board for two 60-day periods each calendar year until the end of the mayor’s term without City Council approval.

That ruffled feathers of some council members, who will consider limiting the mayoral power at a coming committee meeting.

“I think there’s been some power here that’s been misused,” Ald. Linda Linford told the mayor and the council. “I think the citizens of Warrenville deserve our best efforts and not just a power struggle.” Lund did not respond.

Sinnott will serve on the board until June 1, 1999.
