Cisco acquisition: Computer-networking gearmaker Cisco Systems Inc. said it agreed to acquire American Internet Corp., a closely held Internet software concern, for $56 million in stock. Cisco is competing in the market to provide equipment to telephone companies, Internet-service providers and others building networks to combine data, voice and television signals. American Internet makes software for Internet Protocol address-management and Internet access. Internet Protocol, or IP, is a software system that allows consumers to place calls from computer to computer, computer to telephone or phone to phone.
