DuPage County residents whose trees have fallen prey to Asian lyonghorn beetles may not have to foot the bill for having the trees removed and destroyed.
County Board member Roger Jenisch (R-Bloomingdale) said Thursday he was “99 percent sure” he would introduce a resolution at Tuesday’s County Board meeting that would seek to have the county and other taxing bodies cover the costs of tree removal and destruction.
About 20 infested trees in the county are slated for removal, Jenisch said.
The beetles, first discovered in Chicago’s Ravenswood neighborhood, were found in DuPage County late last month in silver maple trees in a back yard on Rohlwing Road in an unincorporated area near Addison. U.S. Department of Agriculture inspectors later confirmed the presence of Asian longhorn beetles in trees in about 10 nearby yards.
