McHenry developer James Althoff surprised the City Council this week with an unsolicited contribution of $23,000 to help finance construction of a new concession stand in Althoff Park.

The donation will make up for a $23,000 budgetary shortfall in the $99,000 project.

“The park is obviously in honor of my father,” Althoff told the council. “The Althoff family has lived better than we ever thought we’d live and we want to give some of it back to the city.”
