Restorers working at a Gothic church in central Spain have decided that a rare wooden figure of a black Jesus Christ originally was white.
The 13th-century carving had been darkened by smoke from votive candles, says Agustin Gonzalez, mayor of Barco de Avila. It has long attracted pilgrims from the mountainous Castilian region.
The town council in Barco de Avila, 100 miles of west of Madrid, plans to display the Christ in a side chapel of the restored church, with special lighting to show off its color, Gonzalez says.
