McHenry County’s Veterans Assistance Commission on Wednesday named James Doran of McHenry to be the commission’s next superintendent.
He will assume his duties Sept. 1.
Doran succeeds William H. Walter, superintendent since the county created the commission nine years ago. Walter, 69, has decided to retire from the $27,500-a-year post.
The VAC office gives financial help to low-income military veterans but is used mostly by veterans who need transportation to or from veteran’s administration hospitals in northern Illinois or southern Wisconsin. The commission has a small bus and minivans to provide transportation.
Last year, about 1,000 of the county’s military veterans used the VAC’s transportation services, according to county records.
Veterans who need assistance may call the VAC at 815-333-4229.
