Michael J. Riffner, 92, of Mt. Prospect, formerly of Chicago, died Sunday in the ManorCare nursing home in Arlington Heights. Born in Kernei, Austria-Hungary, Mr. Riffner moved to Chicago to live with his uncle in 1920. He worked in several establishments, including a bakery and an upholstery shop. He retired about 1970 as a maintenance worker for a Chicago apartment building. He served as secretary of the Northtown Janitors Bowling League in Chicago and was past president of the Waveland Pleasure Club, a German social club in Chicago. After he retired, Mr. Riffner moved to Mt. Prospect. “He was always there for us,” recalled his daughter Carolyn Lydon. “He was a quiet man but he got things done.” Other survivors include his wife of 60 years, Bertha; a daughter, Anne Beck; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A mass will be said at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Raymond Catholic Church, 300 S. Elmhurst Rd., Mt. Prospect.
