It is amazing to me that the teachers who work in the Glenbard High School district are not satisfied with the generous compensation that the taxpayers give them for their jobs. Why is the $2.9 million in additional raises (not including the step increase most teachers receive automatically for each year of service) not enough for a job that gives them three months a year vacation, with hourly wages that would compare with many professions?
They have one thing no other profession has–a guaranteed job for life after tenure and a generous pension package.
Because I have been a teacher for 20 years, I say this not because I don’t know the difficulties, demands and dedication of teachers. I say this because most people who work have difficulties and demands also.
I believe that teachers should be ashamed to walk a picket line in a town where the average wages are often less than their starting pay of $31,738, and for 240 days, not 180 days of work. The top of the scale of $76,171 for a teacher with 20 years of experience is a dream many professionals never attain in their lifetimes.
What amount is ever going to be enough?
