Anton Kovacs, 88, of Jefferson Park, a World War II veteran and a co-founder of St. Stephen King of Hungary Church, died Wednesday in Our Lady of the Resurrection Hospital on the Northwest Side of Chicago. Born in Hungary, Mr. Kovacs immigrated to the U.S. in 1927 and settled in Chicago. He served in the U.S. Army for three years as an combat engineer, mainly in the South Philippines and Korea. In 1944, he was awarded the Purple Heart, his son, Anton, said. Mr. Kovacs was one of the founders of St. Stephen King of Hungary Church, established in 1934. He worked in a tool manufacturing company in the Chicago area. In addition to his son, he is survived by his wife, Irene. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Stephen King of Hungary Church, 2015 W. Augusta Blvd., Chicago.
