I now have a newfound empathy for crime victims.

Last week, my bike was stolen from my car in my alley garage, which was left open for all of 10 minutes. Though hardly a big deal, I was surprised by the rage and anger that filled me. Moreover, while strolling the streets this weekend, I found myself looking at people’s bikes and paying especially close attention to those people whose bikes resembled mine.

This taught me–on a small scale–what others must feel when victimized. If losing a bike can instill the anger I felt, I can only imagine what a man feels like after being held up or what a woman feels when assaulted.
