Thanks to Reo M. Christenson for “A Bronx cheer for Madison Avenue” (Voice, Aug. 5). Indeed our “surfeit of advertising makes ours a raucous and conspicuously crass culture. . .” and it does “. . .produce a rebellious mood from citizens who care about the quality of their lives.”
Sometimes it seems the advertisers are determined to make us a bunch of lemmings, following the crowd–until it comes to jumping off the cliff (when there is no longer any credit available on our credit cards). Sometimes ads are so insulting that the only defense is to turn off the TV or radio.
