Ally McBeal’s clothes may be sort of ’80s, but that will change next season. Rachel Stanley, the new costume director for “Ally McBeal,” says she has been given “room to play by the brilliant writing of series creator David E. Kelley.” So instead of being bogged down by the tedious reality most people face when getting dressed for the office, Stanley is a bit freer, she says.
For the sophomore season of “Ally McBeal,” look for the women cast members to be dressed in the new knee-length skirts paired with narrow tops–except for Ally. Her skirts will stay short.
The fresh approach: Stanley plans to dress Calista Flockhart’s character in shorter jackets paired with short skirts and dresses worn with longer jackets, all of which work well with her slight figure. And the female cast will be the epitome of trendy in gray, the season’s hot color, except for the star, who will be clad in suits of soft blues, greens and mauves.
Stanley can’t predict what elements of Ally’s wardrobe viewers will relate to. The hits last season were BCBG Max Azria’s sharkskin suits, Bebe’s V-neck sweaters and the Jennifer Jacobson for Jenna Wear scarves. Let’s not forget the nocturnal craze over the Nick and Nora Sleepwear pajamas that Ally wears when dancing with her fantasy baby.
She did, however, drop this clue: Accessories will be kept minimal, with all of the women wearing silver or platinum jewelry, except for Elaine, who will wear gold. And Ally’s famous 3-inch-heeled loafers? They will be scaled down to be cleaner and less chunky with a more pointed toe. Ouch?
