Gertrude Thor, 96, a homemaker and former department store furrier, died Friday in Michaelsen Care Center in Batavia. Mrs. Thor emigrated to the United States from her native Glava, Sweden, in 1919. She had worked as a furrier for the now-closed Mandel Brothers department store in Chicago. During World War II, she worked as an accounting clerk at U.S. Steel Corp. Survivors include her daughter, Eva Ellison; five brothers and sisters; six grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Trinity Covenant Church, 9230 S. Pulaski Rd., Oak Lawn. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Holmstad Retirement Community, 700 Fabian Pkwy., Batavia.
