In his Sept. 22 letter, reader Paul L. Whiteley Sr. asks, “Has the Republican Party set a precedent for trying to bring down a president from the opposing party they couldn’t beat in a presidential election?” The answer is–no; that precedent was set by the Democratic Party back in 1974 when it brought down a president who had accomplished far more in office than the current president and who couldn’t have been beaten in a presidential election.

To further refresh Mr. Whiteley’s memory, Mr. Nixon was forced to resign or face impeachment under the very same verdict now faced by Mr. Clinton–lying under oath.
