There are so many haunted houses this year in the city and suburbs that it’s, well, scary. In the city, many of the same haunts are still haunted, but a new ghost, Captain Fear, has come out to frequent Navy Pier. Skyline Stage will be transformed into Captain Fear’s Haunted Ship, designed for children ages 4 to 12. There will be pirate ghosts, creepy characters and long-lost treasures.
Kay’s Haunted House in Tinley Park is one of many places you can get a good Halloween scare while helping the community. That’s because Rollin Kay, a theater graduate and advocate for homeless people, is again conducting his haunted house to raise funds for the Victor J. Andrew Soup Kitchen, 111th and Indiana Avenue. High school students from District 230 also get in on the act, some using it as an opportunity to fulfill their community service hours, while others are theater enthusiasts. This year Kay’s will be broadened to take on more of a festival-like atmosphere. In addition to the haunted house, local bands will entertain.
Annoyance Theatre is teaming up with special-effects expert James Vale to open Terror Through Time in Wauconda, billed as the newest and one of the largest haunted houses in the Midwest. Vale has worked on such films as “Alien Nation,” “Prince of Darkness” and “Escape from L.A.” but returned to Illinois from Hollywood to pursue a dream of building his own multimedia haunted attraction. Terror Through Time has its own story: Time travel is discovered, something goes wrong and an unsuspecting public becomes witness to some of the most evil moments and places, such as hospital mishaps, death temples and serial killer homes.
