If Timothy Christian’s soccer players were intimidated by Wheaton Academy on Wednesday, they certainly didn’t show it.
The Trojans scored in the 15th minute and held on for a 2-1 victory over Wheaton (15-3-2), the regular-season conference champion, to win the Private School League tournament in West Chicago.
“For the first time they believed they could beat this team,” said Timothy Christian coach Jeff Klein, whose team was defeated by Wheaton 2-1 earlier this season. “This time we weren’t satisfied to lose by a goal. We had resolve.”
Junior Matt Dalbey sparked Timothy Christian (13-6), assisting Dave DeYoung’s goal and scoring eight minutes later.
Klein said he hopes the victory gives his team momentum heading into the Class A sectional, where it meets Benet on Tuesday.
“We’re going to have to keep playing at this level to have a chance,” he said.
