The Wolves, already rich in offensive talent by International Hockey League standards, could be getting considerably richer, at least for a while.
Center Todd White, who tied Wolves left wing Steve Maltais for the IHL goal-scoring title last season with 46, was slated to be loaned to the Wolves by the Blackhawks Friday, pending completion of paperwork between the two teams.
White, 23, would be the third player loaned by the Hawks to the Wolves this season. He was at the Horizon on Friday as his probable new team battled his 1997-98 club, the Indianapolis Ice.
And while the Wolves generated ample scoring chances against the Ice, the Hawks’ primary minor-league affiliate, they might have benefited from White’s finishing touch. Still, riding sharp goaltending from Glenn Healy, the Wolves (3-1-2) managed a 2-1 victory before a crowd of 6,031.
James Black, who had been loaned to the Wolves by the Hawks to start the season, scored twice as the Wolves handed the Ice (2-1-1) its first loss of the season. Black, who now leads the Wolves with six goals in four games, was traded by the Hawks to the Washington Capitals on Oct 15. However, after one game with the Caps, he was reassigned to the Wolves last Tuesday.
Defenseman Bryan Fogarty, who also had been with the Hawks in training camp, had Indianapolis’ lone goal.
The teams were tied 1-1 after one period. Black opened the scoring during a power play at 4:45 of the first period by firing a low screened shot from the high slot under Ice goalie Kirk Daubenspeck.
Fogarty tied it 1-1 at 17:31 after the Wolves were unable to clear the puck from their zone for nearly a minute. He stepped in from the right point and ripped Ryan Vandenbussche’s centering pass over Healy’s glove hand.
Black netted the game-winner at 4:52 of the third period, batting in a rebound of a Niklas Andersson shot.
