Re: Rick Morrissey’s “NU runs out of luck” commentary (Tribune, Oct. 18):

Thesis: Gary Barnett is the best college football coach in the country. Evidence: Barnett’s transformation of the NU football program from perennial doormat to repeat Big Ten champion (including 15 consecutive conference victories) is unsurpassed in the history of college athletics. Only John Wooden’s 10 NCAA titles is comparable. Among current football coaches only Joe Paterno rivals Barnett, and stolid Joe is not nearly as good copy as Gary.

Last Saturday Northwestern played Michigan even up with a squad filled with freshmen. NU football hasn’t run out of luck, just upperclassmen. That problem will take care of itself.
