Belle — In 1995, Black Elegance editor Sonia Alleyne put a size 16 woman in a mini-dress on the cover with the headline “Not try’n to be a size 8.” It was the magazine’s hottest-selling issue. “There was a tremendous outpouring of thanks (from readers),” Alleyne says. Shortly thereafter, Belle, a lifestyle magazine for full-figured black women, debuted. “We’ve taught women how to appreciate and love who they are and the shapes of their bodies,” says Alleyne, which includes feeling “sexy and desirable.” A subscription to Belle, a sister publication of Black Elegance, is $12.95 for four issues.
