As an 8th grader at Shepard Junior High School, the editorial “The threat of the flag amendment” (Oct. 10) caught my eye.

This proposed amendment is a genuine threat. Freedom of speech is what makes America different from other countries.

The editorial stated: “Supporters of this measure find it impossible to stomach the destruction of a revered American symbol.” As one who does not support this frightening amendment, I find it impossible “to stomach the destruction” of what our country stands for. The flag is a symbol of our freedoms and what we went through to gain them. Passing this amendment would be as degrading to the flag as setting it aflame.
