In response to “What’s so wrong with changing your life” by Gloria E. Alicea-Hernandez (Commentary, Nov. 10), I have to admit that, as a male, I started to watch Oprah in its late-night time slot after Nightline. Her new format is the most innovative television I have seen in that it promotes positive values and a spiritual focus compatible with any religious tradition while at the same time not promoting any religion.
It was not too many years ago that Oprah was a pioneer of trash television. But she saw the destructive path for society that kind of media was creating and turned it around 180 degrees.
I commend Oprah Winfrey for the steps she has taken. It was a brave move that I hope will inspire other television programming with similar uplifting and positive goals.
For those who don’t agree, Jerry Springer will always be on.
