Each year as the holiday party season comes upon us I try to find a new, distinct and moderately priced sparkling wine for use at home and for gifts. This year’s choice fills my requirements and also comes in a very pretty, festive package.

It is Mirabelle brut, a California sparkler produced from North Coast grapes by the folks at Schramsberg, one of the first and best producers of premium fizz. Mirabelle, sold locally for $11 to $14, is a lively, well-balanced wine that is dry without being tart. It is perfectly suited to being sipped by itself or with appetizers such as smoked fish, shellfish and egg dishes.

Consider pouring it, as well, with first or main courses of fish or poultry that are assertively spiced. It will not be well served, however, if paired with a sweet dessert.
