Can anyone tell me when the words “affect” and “effect” dropped out of the English language? If you haven’t noticed, they have been replaced by the ubiquitous “impact” and all of its variations.

Here is the latest miscarriage, which I just came upon: “. . .reductions will be significant and impactful. . .”

Now, I realize the trend is to use superlatives wherever ordinary words will do, but the impact is certainly lost on me!
