Argentina’s ruling Peronist Party won an upset in a key provincial vote Sunday, boosting their spirits ahead of 1999 presidential elections.

With just over 90 percent of the vote counted, Peronist candidate Jose de la Sota had 49.6 percent in the race for the governorship of Cordoba, Argentina’s second most populous province, state news agency Telam reported. Incumbent Ramon Mestre of the centrist Radical Party opposition stood at 39.1 percent, Telam said.

De la Sota’s victory marked the first time in 25 years that the Peronists captured the governorship of Cordoba. Nationwide, the Peronists lag the opposition Alliance formed by the Radicals and the center-left Frepaso in polls for the presidential election at the end of 1999.
