The validity of one candidate’s petition for the Crystal Lake City Council is being challenged.
Johanna Etters filed a complaint with the Crystal Lake Local Board of Elections against candidate Patty Sahlin, who is running for the City Council. A hearing Monday at the McHenry County Courthouse was postponed until Jan. 6 because of a lack of a quorum.
Elections board member Aaron Shepley was absent. Roy Nystrom, a member of the elections board, was disqualified from hearing the challenge, because he is an incumbent candidate for the City Council.
A petition for a council candidate must be signed by 59 registered voters who live in Crystal Lake. Sahlin, who acknowledged she is political neophyte, said she submitted a petition with 68 signatures, though she said some may not be valid.
Sahlin is leader of the controversial Sentinel Group, a group of homeowners who have said they were overcharged for a project that brought sewer and water mains to the North Shore.
