Plans by NASA to launch three probes to land on Mars could be threatened by adverse weather, an Air Force meteorologist said Saturday.

There was only a 30 percent chance the Mars Polar Lander and two smaller craft would make it off the launch pad Sunday, said launch weather officer Joel Tumbiolo.

“We are dealing with a major storm system,” he said, noting that thunderstorms and a cold front were forecast.

The Delta 2 rocket was to blast off at 2:21 p.m. CST. NASA has 25 days to get the mission under way to take advantage of a favorable alignment of Earth and Mars.
