– Ohio’s DNR is proudly testing a 54-foot trawler to be used for Lake Erie fisheries research, much to the envy of Illinois fishery biologists, who generally hire commercial vessels for work on Lake Michigan.

– While Chicago’s lakefront anglers still reveled in the discovery that northern pike have increased in certain harbors, word comes of several major catches nearby–before the big freeze shut down conventional fishing. A 44-incher, easily weighing 20 pounds, was caught and released on Lake Waubesa near Madison, Wis., and Illinois’ Kishwaukee River yielded a bunch of nice examples, including northerns of 35 and 32 inches. That 44-incher is a Canadian-quality catch.
