The Jan. 1 editorial “The decline of drunk driving” rightly relates the decline in alcohol-related auto fatalities as a great improvement, and I agree. But some of this reduction in deaths is due to safer cars and better medical lifesaving procedures, resulting in a higher survival rate. Unfortunately, many survivors are left with lifelong physical and mental deficits, destroying their lives and those of their families.

Reduction of alcohol-related auto fatalities is a triumph, and all efforts must be made to continue this trend. But the sad lives of many survivors must also be remembered in the fight to eliminate drunk driving.
