I wholeheartedly support reducing emissions in the Chicago area from autos. Automobiles are the No. 1 cause of pollution and should be the No. 1 focus for air-purity control. Unfortunately, as noted in your article, there is no consensus as to whether emissions testing actually works (“Emissions tests, and lines, expanded,” Page 1, Feb. 2).
There is a sure-fire way to cut auto emissions that benefits us not just in terms of emissions but also traffic congestion and physical fitness–stop driving so much. Most car trips are less than two miles, and most trips could be easily accomplished by walking, riding a bicycle or public transportation.
A parked car releases no pollution.
