There are many criteria that may be used to determine the greatness of a newspaper. One of the most time-honored is to examine the depth and breadth of thought expressed in its editorial pages. A truly great newspaper presents to its readers not only well-reasoned, well-researched and insightful opinions but also a broad spectrum of thought.

The Tribune, though a basically conservative outlet by nature, by and large presents a wide range of thought on its editorial pages.

Then there’s Linda Chavez.

Ms. Chavez seems to lack the imagination required to express independent thought on any subject that does not have to do with the alleged sins of Bill Clinton. From Whitewater to national security to the price of cucumbers, President Clinton gets a blanket of universal blame from Linda Chavez. She has been banging this same conservative drumbeat for the past several months, never varying her tune, always to the same rhythm.

Unfortunately for Ms. Chavez and the Tribune, a drum with an unchanging beat soon becomes background noise, something not listened to but vaguely registered somewhere in the back of one’s mind as we enjoy the full variety of the symphony before us. What a tragic waste of precious print space for the Tribune and its readers.
