John B. Grabowski, 70, of Palatine, former president of Douglas Savings and Loan, died Friday in Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. Born in Chicago, Mr. Grabowski worked for the savings and loan for 35 years before his retirement in 1994. He graduated from DePaul University and received a law degree from Lewis University. “He was a hard worker, easy-going and well-liked,” said his son John L. Grabowski.”He knew everybody, from governors to attorneys general.” An Army veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Grabowski was active in many organizations, including American Legion Post 600 in Clearing, where he was a past commander; American Legion Merle Guild Post 208; Arlington Heights VFW Post 981; the Arlington Heights Rotary Lunch Club, where he also was president; the American Bar Association; the Arlington Heights Chamber of Commerce; Elks Club 2048; the Illinois Bar Association; the Polish Advocate Society and others. He also was a partner in the law firm of Grabowski and Apostol and Associates. Survivors include his wife, Dolores; another son, Mark; two sisters, Lillian Janiga and Regina ; and three brothers, Edward, Adam and Jerome. A mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. Monday in Our Lady of the Wayside Catholic Church, 432 W. Park St., Arlington Heights.
