Young girls of the 18th and early 19th Centuries were expected to master needlework in preparation for running a household. To show off their sewing skills, many girls spent countless hours embroidering fancy pictorial samplers, now highly sought by antiques collectors.
Two longtime textile authorities, Susan Kellerman and Kathy Mathews, will discuss samplers at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Garfield Farm Museum, Garfield Road and Illinois Highway 38 near Geneva. To make reservations for the lecture, call 630-584-8485.
Kellerman and Mathews co-founded the Lake Michigan Sampler Guild, based in Glen Ellyn. Kellerman will discuss the history of European samplers, and Mathews will focus on American samplers. The presentation will include a slide show and sampler exhibit.
