AAIM has been fighting drunk driving in Illinois since 1982. We strongly support Mayor Daley’s proposal for confiscation of vehicles. It has been shown that 50 percent to 75 percent of drivers whose licenses are suspended as the result of DUI continue to drive.
The objection raised whenever anti-DUI advocates propose getting DUI offenders off the road by vehicle confiscation is that this would unfairly penalize the family. It may be doing the family a favor–not only because they would be relieved at the deterrent effect of this measure on their loved one but by jolting families out of their denial to finally take action. Drunk drivers get killed and injured too. But innocent victims are penalized more severely. Physical, emotional and financial losses are staggering. Here again, people are worrying about protecting the criminals while the victims are overlooked.
The reality is that family members may suffer anytime someone commits a crime. That’s not a good reason to let criminals go unpunished.
