So Steve Chapman believes that Social Security isn’t worth saving. Mr. Chapman may have enough disposable income to invest in a good retirement plan, but most other Americans carry too much debt to do that.

History shows that we have experienced a serious recession or financial crisis every 10 to 15 years. The Congress awakened to that reality during the Depression and enacted Social Security.

And it worked. It is estimated that without Social Security, at least half of the people over 65 would be at or below the poverty level. And that is only part of the benefit. Children are relieved of much of the burden of financial support of their parents. The disabled who are under 65 and dependents of deceased breadwinners are eligible.
