Arville “John” Dellinger, 66, of Elgin, a retired Des Plaines firefighter, died Thursday at his home. Born in Apex, N.C., Mr. Dellinger was stationed at O’Hare while he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. It was during his military service that Mr. Dellinger worked as a firefighter and decided that he had found his calling. In 1962, Mr. Dellinger was sworn in as a Des Plaines firefighter and four years later was promoted to lieutenant. During his 17-year career, Mr. Dellinger also served as an investigator and photographer. “He was a man’s man,” said son Christopher. “A real tough guy.” Other survivors include his wife of 46 years, Eileen; a daughter, Susan; his mother, Roberta; a brother, Billy; a sister, Jackie Williams; and two grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Oehler Funeral Home, 555 Lee St., Des Plaines. Services will follow in the funeral home.
