Barbara Mahany writes that she is haunted by the image of Marilyn Lemak suffocating her children (“I cannot not think about her hands,” Perspective, March 14). Ms. Mahany is trying to imagine the hands that nurture a child being the same hands that drain a child of life. I am appalled by her oversimplification of a tragic event (and the Tribune’s lack of respect that resulted in printing the article).
Ms. Mahany’s imagination leads her to ask how this could happen. Please realize that we, the readers, have an empathy for all of the victims that surpasses our desire to ask how a mother could physically do this. We are able to allow the events of that day to fall into the context of something greater–not just the actions of a person’s hands.
