Philip Schwimmer (Voice, March 14) has equated the Roman numeral M to the Arabic numeral 1,000, as expressed in the metric system by K. While both M and K indicate 1,000 of something, and 2K and MM indicate 2,000, the use of Arabic numbers is not limited in any way as was stated. One place where Roman numerals seem to consistently be used as a measure of time is the release date for movies. This is an artistic decision, not a technical requirement.

If anyone wants to refer to next year as MM, feel free. The rest of us will probably stick with Y2K–and get our M&Ms by the bag.
